POSTDOCTORAL POSITION, MOLECULAR GENETICS AND BIOCHEMISTRY OF DEVELOPMENT IN PHYTOPHTHORA INFESTATIONS, DEPARTMENT OF PLANT PATHOLOGY, UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, RIVERSIDE

Two postdoctoral positions are available at the University of California, Riverside (USA) to study Phytophthora infestans, a fungus-like lower eukaryote (an oomycete) that causes the important late blight diseases of potato and tomato. As the cause of potato late blight, P. infestans is one of the world's most important plant pathogens.

Our laboratory has been using genetic and biochemical approaches to study asexual sporulation, sexual development (mating), spore germination, and host infection in P. infestans. Through microarray, yeast two-hybrid, and gene silencing studies we have identified genes and proteins that appear to play roles in these processes. We are looking for talented and motivated individuals to help identify and study these factors. Examples of specific projects will include analyses of transcription factors, protein kinases, virulence factors, and other participants in development. Methods to be employed will include a combination of genetics, biochemistry, bioinformatics, proteomics, and/or microscopy.

Experience in cloning or biochemical techniques are essential for these positions, however previous work with oomycetes is not required. Scientists with interests or backgrounds in oomycetes, fungi, microbial or plant development, or plant-pathogen interactions are especially welcome to apply.

The positions available immediately, for 2-3 years. General information about the lab is at:
