Our Research Group

This website is the product of a collaborative enterprise to use simulations to study multivariate quantitative genetics. The original research group included Adam Jones, Reinhard Bürger, and Stevan Arnold. Our work on this topic started in the year 2000, when Adam was a postdoctoral fellow in Steve's lab at Oregon State University and they asked Reinhard if he'd be willing to lend a hand. This core group of scientists has been meeting once a year to develop increasingly interesting models since 2001. Over the years, some other individuals have contributed in various ways to our work, and we acknowledge their efforts and our gratitude on this page.

The Core Group

Reinhard Burger

Reinhard Bürger is a Professor of Mathematics at the University of Vienna

Reinhard specializes in the mathematics underlying evolutionary theory. He set the stage for our studies of the G-matrix with individual-based simulations of the maintenance of genetic variation for single quantitative traits. In addition to studying the evolution of the G-matrix and genetic architecture, Reinhard has been working on many other important evolutionary and ecological processes, such as speciation and competition. Reinhard is also the author of a definitive book on evolutionary theory, The Mathematical Theory of Selection, Recombination, and Mutation. Learn more at Reinhard's website.

Stevan Arnold

Stevan Arnold is a Professor of Zoology at Oregon State University

Steve's research focuses on the quantitative genetics of natural and sexual selection. In addition to his work on the G-matrix, Steve studies various topics in evolution, taking advantage of reptiles and amphibians as model systems. His research utilizes a wide variety of approaches, including theory, field studies, behavioral techniques, and molecular techniques. You can find out more at Steve's website.

Adam Jones

Adam Jones is an Associate Professor of Biology at Texas A&M University

Adam's lab uses a combination of theoretical, behavioral and molecular biological approaches to study the evolution of complex traits. His theoretical work focuses on the G-matrix and other topics related to natural and sexual selection. Adam also has an empirical lab, which mainly uses molecular techniques to study various evolutionary issues in many types of organisms. Much of the recent research in Adam's lab has focused on the phenomenon of male pregnancy in seahorses and their relatives. More information can be found at Adam's website.

Other Participants

Paul Hohenlohe

Paul Hohenlohe

Paul spent several summers working with us on various aspects of G-matrix evolution while he was a postdoctoral scientist in Stevan Arnold's lab. He's currently a postdoc at Oregon State University in Steve's lab. Go to Paul's website to find out more about his research.

Suzanne Estes

Suzanne Estes

Suzanne spent a summer in Vienna with us, discussing issues related to G-matrix evolution. She's currently an Assistant Professor at Portland State University. Click here to see Suzanne's website.

Joseph Uyeda

Joseph Uyeda

Joseph worked with us over the last couple of years on a project focused on the way trait optima move over evolutionary time and how the G-matrix responds to realistic patterns of selection. Joseph is currently a Ph. D. student in Stevan Arnold's lab, and more information about his research is available at Joseph's website.

Beverly Ajie

Beverly Ajie

Bev participated in our annual meetings to discuss G-matrix evolution while she was a Ph. D. student in Andy Sih's lab at UC-Davis.

Muhammad Arian

Muhammad Arian

Muhammad has been working on extending our two-trait models of G-matrix evolution to a case with three traits as an undergraduate student in Adam Jones' lab. He also wrote our downloadable G-matrix Renderer and G-matrix simulator, which are available on our See it Evolve page.
