Check out this exciting pipefish mating video made by Charlyn Partridge. Look carefully and you can see a female courting a male Gulf pipefish (Syngnanthus scovelli). She has the distinctive banding pattern, signaling to the male that she is ready to mate. When the female "corkscrews" around the male, she's lining her body up to deposit eggs into the male's brood pouch. The male then fertilizes the eggs. The eggs can be seen through the brood pouch, and they are orange in color. Pretty cool, huh?
