By MATTHEW WATKINS

A bomb threat shut down one of the busiest buildings on the Texas A&M campus Wednesday, turning 10,000 students away from classes.

According to police and university officials, the scare was caused by a typed note found on a bulletin board in a campus residence hall. A student who discovered the note immediately took it to a staff member who called police about 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Officials: Heldenfels Hall closed because of "written threat"

Updated: 9:35 a.m. Wednesday

Texas A&M Univeristy Police closed Heldenfels Hall Wednesday because of a "written threat,"said UPD Chief Elmer Schneider. Police stationed at Heldenfels confirmed that the building will be closed for the entire day, but would only say it was staying closed "for safety precautions."

Schneider said the threat was discovered late Tuesday night, and because the building was unoccupied, law enforcement officers were able to safely and closely inspect the building. The decision to close the building for all of Wednesday was made by Univeristy officials Wednesday morning, he said. Scheider said he expects Heldenfels Hall to reopen on Thursday.

The e-mail, sent in accordance with the Federal Clery Act, reported the building closing and stated that the threat was received Tuesday night. According to the notice, UPD and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms inspected the building Tuesday night.
