Diversity:  A single genus with 10-15 species.

Distribution:  Worldwide as emergent aquatics of fresh to slightly brackish marshes and shores.

Floral structure:

Significant features:  Sepals modified to scales and bristles, stamens either monadelphous or distinct, ovary borne on a slender, long-pubescent stipe.  Plants are monoeious, producing a distinctive long-peduncled spadix-like structure (or 'double spadix') with the terminal portion staminate and the basal portion pistillate.
