What do I do with this DOCX file?
Microsoft Office has changed the default file type for its Office 2007 and 2008 programs. Documents, spreadsheets, and presentations now have an X at the end of the
familiar DOC, XLS and PPT extension.
Earlier versions of Office do not read this file type.
To open these files in Office 2003 for Windows please download and install the Microsoft Compatibility Pack from the links below.
Apple or
Windows
How to save your files in 2003 format by default in Microsoft Office 2007 / 2008.
Windows
- Open the Office program you want to use (each program will have to be changed, this cannot be set globally).
- Click on the Office Button.
- On the bottom right of the menu click "Word Options" (each program in Office will use its name here).
- In the new window click "Save".
- In the "Save files in this format" drop down menu, select Word 97-2003 Document (*.doc).
- Click "OK".
Mac
- Open the Office program you want to use (each program will have to be changed, this cannot be set globally).
- Click on Word in the Finder bar.
- Click on Preferences...
- In the new window click "Save".
- In the "Save files Word files as" box, select Word 97-2004 Document (.doc).
- Click "OK".
