Texas A&M University Department of Biology proudly announces that Dr. Angel Mitchell has received the Research Excellence Award from the College of Arts and Sciences, recognizing her outstanding contributions to scientific discovery and leadership in the field of microbiology.
Since establishing her independent lab in 2019, Dr. Mitchell has advanced the global fight against antibiotic resistance through groundbreaking research on the outer membranes of Gram-negative bacteria. Her work has revealed how targeting specific pathways can re-sensitize bacteria to antibiotics, offering new hope against so-called “superbugs.”
Dr. Mitchell has published 22 peer-reviewed articles in top-tier journals such as PNAS and mBio, secured multiple NIH grants, and received national recognition for both her research and peer review service. Her lab’s recent findings on the enterobacterial common antigen are redefining microbial physiology. This award honors her transformative impact on science and society through innovative, high-impact research.
